Dr. Yan Tao, Professor and Associate Director, Water Resources Research Center, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, HI.

Microbiological risks in natural and engineered environments are important to human health protection. However, these microbiological risks are highly diverse, and are often further complicated by complex environmental conditions. In this talk, we will discuss several areas of studies in my laboratory where we used both traditional microbiological methods and modern molecular and metagenomic tools to characterize and understand microbiological risks in the environment. The natural environments include watersheds and coastal waters, and the engineered systems include wastewater, drinking water, agricultural systems. How the risk information can be used to device new strategies for enhanced human health protection will also be discussed.
